Wood Soil and Water Conservation District is looking for producers who are interested in applying voluntary conservation measures to their fields within the county. Funding is available to reduce the costs of specific practices as part of the Western Lake Erie Basin Nutrient Reduction Program.
The goal of the WLEB NRP is to decrease the amount of phosphorous and nitrogen reaching Lake Erie as a result of agricultural runoff. To meet this goal, farmers can contract for controlled drainage structures (and collector mains if necessary) that can be used to manage the amount of water and nutrients that drain from a field. Controlled drainage structures are used to hold nutrients in the field during the winter. They also can keep summer rainfall in the soil longer, while still maintaining drainage during planting and harvest. Another option producers have is to enroll up to 400 acres into a fertilizer application practice that uses variable rate technology in combination with either cover crops or incorporation into the soil, while maintaining at least 30% residue cover until March 1st.
